A Lesson Not Learned
By Jennifer Angellatta-Moore
I hate to admit it, but women can be the most scandalous creatures on Earth. Why is it that men fail to realize this? Are they so taken with our beauty that they become blind to reality? Does our sex appeal leave them senseless?
Turn on any channel and you will see massive coverage of the latest high profile criminal case. Los Angeles Lakers Guard, Kobe Bryant, who until now has had a boy next-door image, has been charged with sexual assault. No one seems to be without words on this subject. Most people have expressed shock, but when you think about it, it's not hard to believe at all. I'm not saying that Bryant is innocent or guilty; that is not my place to say. Only when all the evidence comes out can we hope that a fair trial will take place. What is easy to believe is the painfully familiar fact that another million-dollar superstar put himself on the wire for a one-night stand. Whether Bryant is guilty or not of the assault, he is not innocent. He is guilty of bad judgment. He said that he did not force the woman to have sex with him. The same statement can be applied to him; no one forced him to invite that woman up to his room.
Women are the heart of this world. We are the mothers of the next generation and nurturers of our loved ones. However, like I said before, women can be cruddy. All
throughout history, there have been women that have taken their men for a fall. It all started with the very first woman, Eve, when she persuaded Adam into breaking the rules. Delilah set up Samson, ultimately causing his death. Deception through beauty did not end in Biblical times; there have been dangerous relationships all they way to the 20th Century. Who can forget Rashida Moore and Marion Barry or Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton? These women were the stars of very controversial stories. No matter what you personally believe the truth was in both cases, no one can argue that these powerful men should have known better.
If the average brotha next door has to worry about a woman purposely breaking the condom to get pregnant, why don't the men who have the most to lose give their indiscretions a second thought? I know broke bammas living in their mama's basements that have shown better judgment with women. If you have a wife, child, and an estate worth millions, why trust a complete stranger? How many times have you turned on the news and heard a story of a spoiled athlete or entertainer cheating on his wife? The wives of these men are either saints or in it for the money, because I would not be that supportive. If it were broadcast all over the world that my husband chose to creep with a cheap trick, I would not be holding his hand at press conferences.
With much power comes much responsibility. When a man has more fame, money, and women than he can handle, he should try harder to steer clear of temptation. Gold diggers can smell dollars miles away just like a German Shepherd can sniff out cocaine at an airport. Tupac stated only the truth when he said, "There's a lotta real G's doing time cause a groupie told a lie." There are men that choose to abuse women because they can. There are also a lot of innocent men that get hemmed up every day. Even though they may not be guilty of the crime they were charged with, they could not have been charged if they did not put themselves in that situation.
I pray that maybe the next man will pay attention and think twice about doing something that he would later regret. Will that happen? Maybe, but history has shown that men with power can become powerless to women with beauty. It is more likely for us to read about another millionaire with an assault charge than to see them learn from the mistakes of their peers. When will they learn?
